Dear Editor: Now more than ever a statue of Mother Cabrini would have been an asset to our city and a breath of fresh air amidst the issues which we are forced to accept daily (“Mother Cabrini Statue Nixed Despite Vote,” Aug. 24).

Preparing a series of short lectures on the Catholic novel for NET/TV has been a rewarding experience for me. Going back over novels that I have read many years ago, at least one back in high school, is like renewing old friendships.

A quick reading of the Gospel parable can be irksome. A dishonest steward is reported to his boss for squandering property. When he is told to prepare an account of his work because he was being fired, his response was seemingly to squander even more of the owner’s property.

An ‘American Schism’ and Church Unity

On Sept. 10, while flying back to Rome from his apostolic visit to Mozambique, Madagascar and Mauritius, Pope Francis was asked about schism in the church, and he replied: “There always is the schismatic option in the church,” and said, “It’s a choice that the Lord leaves to human freedom. I am not afraid of schism … I pray for them not to happen, as the spiritual health of many people is at stake.”

Sister Mavis Jewell, D.C.

Sister Mavis Jewell, D.C., a native of Brooklyn who was a member of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul for 60 years, died Aug. 13 at the St. Louise House Residence in Albany, N.Y. She was 85.

Patricia McCormick

Patricia McCormick, sister of Msgr. Joseph P. Nagle, a retired priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn, died on Aug. 27. Her funeral Mass was offered at St. Thomas More Church, Breezy Point, on Aug. 30. Burial followed at St. John Cemetery, Middle Village.

Daniel A. Garcia Barrios

Daniel A. Garcia Barrios, the father of Deacon Daniel Garcia, who is serving at St. John Vianney Parish, Flushing, died on Aug. 22 in Guatemala. A memorial Mass will be scheduled for a later date.

Sister Patricia Gale, R.S.M.

Sister Patricia Gale, R.S.M.,  a Brooklyn native and a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 61 years, died on Aug. 7 at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Whitestone. Father Joseph M. Nolan

Father Joseph M. Nolan, a retired priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn who had served as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Cambria Heights, for 21 years, died on Aug. 31 at the Bishop Mugavero Residence in Douglaston. He was 97.
