CYO Crowns Girls Hoops Champs

The Catholic Youth Organization of Brooklyn and Queens held its girls’ basketball diocesan championships Feb. 21 at St. John’s Prep, Astoria. Here are the results from each of the respective divisions title games.

St. Saviour Junior Scores 1,000th Point

Lauren Duggan, the point guard and a co-captain of the Pandas varsity team, became the first player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark as a junior. She accomplished the feat Feb. 5 in the team’s final home game of the season, a non-league matchup against St. Vincent Ferrer, Manhattan.

National Signing Day on Feb. 3 was an eventful day at Nazareth H.S., East Flatbush, and Bishop Kearney H.S. indoor track team had an impressive showing at the annual Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA sectional finals.

Former Holy Cross Star Soaks Up Super Bowl

Dean Marlowe, a 2010 graduate of Holy Cross H.S., Flushing, was a member of the Carolina Panthers 2016 Super Bowl squad, though he was listed as inactive for the game itself.

Knights of Columbus Free-Throw Championship

Boys and girls ages nine to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2016 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, sponsored by St. Finbar Council No. 15728.

Texas Rangers Hire McClancy HS Grad

Local baseball standout Anthony Iapoce, a 1991 graduate of Msgr. McClancy M.H.S., will be taking his hitting prowess to the Texas Rangers as the team’s new hitting coach.
