A Golden Moment in Astoria

Longtime parishioners of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Astoria, Deacon Ruben Mendez and his wife, Consuelo, renewed their wedding vows in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 16. Oct. 1 is the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux, and Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Queens Village, will honor the Little Flower in a special way. “Therese, The Story of a Soul,” a live drama performed by Audrey Ahern and presented by Saint Luke Productions, is coming to the parish on Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. This week’s Tip of the Tablet TALK Top Hat goes to Jorge Dominguez who will serve as “godfather” of the annual Lord of Miracles procession at St. Sebastian Church in Woodside, Oct. 1. Dominguez is the editor of the diocesan Spanish-language newspaper, Nuestra Voz.
The Lord of the Miracles is a Peruvian (and also Colombian and Ecuadoran) tradition that has been brought from Latin America to Queens. This year, more than 1,500 people are expected to participate in the Woodside festivities.

Students at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Academy, Park Slope, have been praying every day for the victims of the recent earthquakes and hurricanes.
