The Communion Debate

Dear Editor: Nobody seriously thought that the Church might change a dogma or an ex cathedra moral teaching regarding giving Holy Communion to civilly remarried Catholics or to practicing homosexuals. However, toning down a serious offense against God may have the opposite effect from what was intended.

Which approach is more effective in urging people to repentance, saying that: 1) God loves you, you are welcome in the life of the Church in spite of living in sin; or 2) you are living in sin and should you die without repentance, you will go to hell?
