The St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, junior varsity baseball team won this year’s city championship for the first time since 1980.
The team defeated Iona Prep, New Rochelle, N.Y., 5-2 in the championship game. Pitcher Robert Einersen tossed a gem to guide the L’il Terriers to victory.
Fifty sophomores tried out this past March for only 18 spots on the junior varsity team. As freshmen, the boys had a successful season, but the competition gets better each year on the junior varsity level.
St. Francis actually lost two of its first three league games but rebounded to only two league contests the entire rest of the season.
Outfielder Connor Magee lead the team with a whopping .522 batting average and 47 hits. Third baseman Matt Urena, outfielder Peter Tagios, pitcher Shane Herrity and first baseman Anthony Vieto all hit over .400 for the season.
In addition to Einersen, the team’s pitching was led by Herrity, Anthony Pravata and John Michelli.
Coaches Justin Kelly, Peter Loeb and Ryan McManus were extremely proud of their team for a great season.
