Important Stories, Beautifully Told

Dear Editor: Since I retired from DeSales Media in 2020 after spending 50 years on The Tablet staff, I have looked forward each week to my weekly mailed copy of the paper.

I was particularly impressed by the May 30 edition, which featured several articles by Bill Miller and Paula Katinas about Catholics and their role in the American Revolution.

These are important and interesting stories you will not find anywhere else.

I always knew about Charles Carroll of Carrollton being the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, and I was aware that a Brooklyn neighborhood and park were named in his memory. But I did not realize that his cousin, Daniel Carroll, and Thomas Fitzsimons were the only Catholics to sign the U.S. Constitution.

And it was interesting to read that Catholics, although not readily accepted by mainstream society of the time, persisted and proved themselves to be loyal and patriotic Americans.

The Tablet continues to be one of the best Catholic newspapers in the country. I’m proud to have been a small part of this diocesan gem.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, may God continue to bless this outstanding nation.

May He continue to smile upon The Tablet, DeSales Media, and its wonderfully talented staff.

Kudos to Two of Your Reporters

Dear Editor: Last week, I had the pleasure to meet The Tablet’s Bill Miller and Currents News’ Jessica Easthope.

They came out to Glendale to do a story on two of the Msgr. Sherman Council 5103 charter members — Mr. John Hickey and Donald Gander (“Two Founding Members Honored at KofC Council 5103’s 65th Anniversary,” May 23).

On May 15, we held a 65th-anniversary dinner at Roma View in Howard Beach, and we honored them. The way Bill and Jessica handled the interview was so impressive. Hickey and Gander, at first, didn’t open up, but Jess and Bill got them to where they needed to go. It turned into a great story!

People have been so happy to read the article. So many compliments! Great job Bill and Jessica!

Pope Offers Guidance For the AI Age

Dear Editor: Thank you, Pope Leo XIV, for this magnificent document (“Pope Leo Urges Humanity to Build Civilization of Love in Digital World,” May 30).

I so appreciate the pope’s ability to see the AI issue and anticipate solutions based on preserving and enhancing God’s creation. I hope every parish will make this encyclical available and establish study groups that will guide us through this masterful and inspired work.

It’s always good to get out in front of an issue that will so completely affect humankind.

Thank You, Father Heanue

Dear Editor: We, as parishioners of St. Joan of Arc, are very grateful for all the work Father Christopher Heanue has contributed to the church (“St. Joan of Arc Raises a School Record $35,000 For Catholic Education,” May 30) in less than a year.

It’s incredible!
