The St. John’s University, Jamaica, Red Storm men’s basketball fell to Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., 69-67 in overtime Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

But the story of the day was that the Red Storm welcomed members of the N.Y.C. Police, Fire and Sanitation Departments, as well as the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) who were the first responders during Hurricane Sandy in late October, 2012.

Senior administrators from St. John’s made a formal presentation at center court during halftime to thank the first responders for their unyielding service in protecting the city.

“St. John’s is thrilled to have representatives from New York City’s four major service agencies and their heroic departments join us for First Responders Day. We felt this opportunity was long overdue as we join with our fans to thank the N.Y.P.D., F.D.N.Y., OEM and D.S.N.Y. for their tireless efforts in keeping New Yorkers safe each and every day,” said Martha Hirst, executive vice president and chief operating officer. “We value our partnerships with these critical agencies and look forward to a wonderful afternoon of fun and exciting college basketball for all to enjoy.”
