CITY ISLAND — The New York City Marathon course winds 26 miles through all five boroughs, but every time he runs it, Mike Rauh draws energy early in the race from Brooklyn’s cityscape of church steeples.

Rauh, a lifelong Catholic, said he appreciates the borough’s reputation as being a “City of Churches.” The many steeples remind him of the scripture, Isaiah 40:31, which gives him a boost
