Preparing Young Women for College and Beyond

The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA), Jamaica Estates, is a four-year college preparatory school for young women sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, L.I.
Admission is selective, based on a competitive exam and sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade achievement.
TMLA welcomes young women who are eager and motivated to learn. Our goal is to educate the world’s future leaders, and we empower our young women to recognize and develop their own unique talents and gifts. To that end, TMLA students enjoy a challenging academic curriculum in an atmosphere that requires academic excellence and respect for all. TMLA develops the whole person — academically, athletically and spiritually — through extracurricular activities that play an important role in the life of each student.
Our religious studies curriculum follows the Catholic doctrine, and we have numerous opportunities for service, formation and retreats. Daily Mass is celebrated in the school chapel. All are welcome. Students serve as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion.
TMLA is accredited by the N.Y.S. Board of Regents and the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges. TMLA has a 100 percent graduation and college acceptance rate. One hundred percent of each graduating class receives a N.Y.S. Regents Diploma. AP courses are offered in every major academic discipline. One hundred percent of AP students take the AP Exam.
Honors-level courses are offered for freshman in English, social studies, living environment and integrated algebra. Students may earn college credit through courses offered in affiliation with St. John’s University. Last year, TMLA graduates earned more than $30 million in academic scholarships and grants to colleges and universities.
TMLA has three modern science laboratories. Courses in forensics, environmental science and anatomy are just some of the electives offered in the science department.
TMLA offers a program in fine arts with a focus on art or music. French, Italian, Latin and Spanish are offered. Foreign language students have won numerous awards in the annual foreign language competitions held each year across the country.
Our school network provides wired and wireless Internet access to the entire campus. TMLA has two computer labs. Computers are also available in resource centers, the library, science labs, art studios, guidance complex, faculty work areas and offices.
Also offered are iPads, NOOKs, SMART tablets and other electronic learning devices. Students may bring their own technology to the school for academic use only.
TMLA has a wide variety of extracurricular activities and clubs that help students become integrated individuals. Each class year is guided by the same class dean and a guidance counselor for four years. TMLA has a full-time college counselor on campus. SAT prep courses are offered at a nominal fee.
TMLA offers a balanced, high-quality athletic program and has 29 competitive teams competing in both the Brooklyn/Queens and Nassau/ Suffolk Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA).
