Only In Print: Sainthood for Father Capodanno Can Now Be Considered Under New Criteria

PROSPECT HEIGHTS — On Sept. 4, 1967, Father Vincent Capodanno, then a lieutenant and a chaplain in the U.S. Marines, joined a quick reaction force sent to assist pinned-down Marines fighting in the Quang Tin province of South Vietnam. 

In 2017, Pope Francis established a third path for sainthood for people who died prematurely by offering their lives for the love of God and neighbor. Father Capodanno, a Navy chaplain from Staten Island, was killed in Vietnam, and he is the first to be considered for this new path…

  1. Staten Island looks forward to the day we can call our native son Saint Vincent R. Capodanno M.M! We know he is a saint but wish the Church to officially acknowledge it.
