The school band at St. Edmund Prep, Homecrest, celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a concert.
As part of the celebration, alumni from the past 10 years returned to play with the band.
Conductor and band teacher John Malazzo organized the event.
There was a great variety for everyone. The pep band played “Louie, Louie,” LaBamba” and “My Boyfriend’s Back.” The concert band played favorites such as “Imperium,” “Northwestern Skies” and “Jump Street Boogie.” The Badinage Ensemble played “Knights of Destiny,” “Themes from the 1812 Overture” and “Music from Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Scott O’Donnell and Jim Grillo, two graduates who are currently teaching at the Prep and who were band members, joined in to play a few songs.
The last song, “Lean On Me” by Bill Withers, was played by the Badinage Ensemble, concert band, beginner’s band and alumni.
“Being part of the inaugural concert band was truly one of the best decisions I have ever made during my academic career,” O’Donnell said.
“My fondest memories come from my time spent practicing, preparing and performing with my friends and fellow musicians. Being part of the band motivated me to be the best trumpet player I could be and helped me understand that quality music does not only come from solo performances but from the collective effort and artistry of every instrument.”
“Mr. Malazzo doesn’t only teach us how to be better musicians; he teaches us to be better people as well,” said Ashley Roberts. “I’ve made lasting friendships due to the band program.”
During the ceremony, Malazzo was presented with a plaque for his dedication, service and his sharing of his talent for the past 10 years at St. Edmund.
Grillo was acknowledged for donating a set of drums to the band.
