St. John’s University, Jamaica, men’s basketball sophomore forward Julian Champagnie earned both Big East and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week honors for the week ending Jan. 17. It’s the first weekly honors for the 6-foot, 8-inch graduate of Bishop Loughlin H.S., Fort Greene. Champagnie averaged 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game and drilled nine 3-pointers.
St. Joseph’s College Brooklyn, Clinton Hill, hosted a virtual trivia night on Jan. 23. Head men’s basketball coach Joseph Cocozello and Associate Financial Aid Office Director Vanessa Barrios served as the emcees. All proceeds benefitted the Joseph M. Lewinger Scholarship for Future Educators. Lewinger, a graduate of St. Joe’s and the former athletic director at The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates, died last spring from COVID-19.
Kyle Flood, a graduate of St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, has joined the coaching staff of University of Texas, Austin, new head football coach Steve Sarkisian. The Bayside native was recently the offensive line coach on the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, team that won this year’s national championship game.
