Sister Anna Bittner (Sister John Therese of Montfort), F.d.L.S., a member of the Daughters of Wisdom for 58 years, died Aug. 14 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Convent in Sound Beach, L.I. She was 82.
Sister Anna was born in Semlin, Yugoslavia, and she immigrated to California as a young girl. It’s said she learned about the Daughters of Wisdom in the book, “True Devotion to Mary,” by St. Louis de Montfort and went to Hicks Street in Brooklyn to find out more. She made her profession in 1961.
Her ministries included Park Manor Adult Home and Family Home Care of Brooklyn and Queens, where she provided care to the homebound. For almost 30 years, she taught religious education and served in parish ministry at St. Matthew’s Church, Crown Heights. Earlier, she served at Our Lady of Presentation, Brownsville, where she taught remedial reading and religious education.
“No matter where Anna went, everyone who encountered her felt great love, care and concern,” Sister Christine Scherer, F.d.L.S. said. “Here was Anna, who began life at two and a half pounds, who was short and slight all her life, and who never did anything to draw attention to herself or to the good works she was doing. And she was given a glorious and loving farewell that many a king or celebrity would die for.”
Her funeral Mass was Aug. 20 at St. Matthew’s.
So sad to read of her passing!!! Sister Anna was greatly loved and admired!!! May she rest in peace!!!
