Sister Barbara McKenna, R.S.M., formerly Sister Mary Grignion, a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas for 58 years, died Oct. 24 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, L.I. She was 76.

Born in Brooklyn, she attended St. Jerome’s Elementary School, Flatbush and Mercy Juniorate H.S.

She received her bachelor’s in education from St. John’s University, Jamaica, and her master’s in social studies from CW Post University, Nassau County.

Sister Barbara began her ministry in education in Queen of Angels, Sunnyside, 1963–65; St. Edward the Confessor, Syosset, L.I.,1966–71; St. Pius X, Plainview, L.I., 1971–76; Mercy H.S., Riverhead, L.I., 1976–2005. She also served as director of The Gathering Place at McGann-Mercy H.S., Riverhead.

She is survived by her sister, her brother, sister-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Flatbush.
