Brother Gerard Brereton, F.M.S., is celebrating his 60th anniversary as a Marist Brother.
He attended the Marist Juniorate in Esopus, N.Y., and the Marist Novitiate in Tyngsboro, Mass., before professing first vows in 1965. He worked at Marist H.S., Chicago, and Eugene, OR, and spent time working internationally in Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Mexico.
He attended the Second Novitiate in Rome, Italy, in 1973 and the Third Age Renewal Program in Manziana, Italy, in 2004, after six years of working at the Marist Brothers General House in Rome, Italy.
He has spent time working for both the USA Province’s Development Office and for Champagnat Hall, the Brothers’ retirement community, in the Bronx.
In 2015, he lived at the East Harlem International Community, East Harlem, before moving to the Archbishop Molloy H.S., Community in Briarwood, where he lives now.
Brother Edward Kent, O.S.F., has been a member of the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn, for 60 years.
Growing up in Holy Name parish, Windsor Terrace, he entered the order in 1958 and received the Habit the following year. He began his career teaching English at Bishop Ford H.S., Park Slope, in 1963. The following year he was assigned to Saint Anthony’s H.S., Smithtown, LI, as Chairman of the English Department.
From 1965 through 1971, he was an assistant professor of English at St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights.
In 1971, he began his long association with St. Francis Prep, Williamsburg, and Fresh Meadows, as a teacher and then Chairman of the English Department until 2001.
After leaving St. Francis Prep, he taught Irish Studies at Queens College, Fordham and St. John’s Universities.
Since 2011, he has taught in the Adult Education Center at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Manhattan.
Brother Brian Curry, S.C., is marking his 50th year as a Brother of the Sacred Heart.
Born in Brooklyn, he attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School, Prospect Heights, and St. Joseph’s H.S., Metuchen, N.J., before entering the
novitiate.
He studied at Spring Hill College, Mobile, Ala., and did graduate studies at Villanova University, Philadelphia.
From 1985 to 1995, he served in Belvidere, N.J., as Provincial of the New York Province.
Most of his ministry has been at Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, where he has taught English and Religion, worked in the guidance department, and coached track and field.
Currently, he is the director of college guidance at Msgr. McClancy.
