Dear Editor: Here we go again! An individual, who I will keep unnamed, accused of breaking into a 65-year-old woman’s home, assaulting her and stealing her car was arrested after allegedly assaulting another woman and running from police. He was eventually caught after local officers chased him through a neighborhood.
According to court documents, this individual had a history of illegal entry into the United States. He had been deported 20 times.
Now for the lunacy. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged an immigration detainer against him, asking local authorities to notify them before releasing him again to allow ICE to take that individual into custody.
In my letter to the editor (July 15) titled “The Law Is the Law,” I took exception to Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, president of the U. S. Catholic Bishops, who stated that local jurisdictions should not be required to enforce federal immigration laws. Was he advocating for breaking the law that clearly specifies that it is the duty of all law enforcement agencies, whether local or federal, to interact in the enforcement of immigration laws of this country?
Should we also be able to pick and choose which of God’s Ten Commandments we least desire? Absolutely Not! The Law Is the Law!
