Throughout Catholic Schools Week, which takes place from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, the diocesan bishops will visit schools and academies throughout the diocese. Here is their schedule.

At Home and in Capital Diocese Prays for the Sanctity of Life

Dozens of faithful attended a Mass for Peace and Justice at St. Josaphat Church, Bayside, on Jan. 22. The Mass was offered in reparation for the nearly 56 million babies aborted in the United States since the Supreme Court legalized abortion on Jan. 22, 1973. The Mass was one of many chances for the faithful of Brooklyn and Queens to pray for the unborn and the pro-life cause on the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

In Pro-Life Homily, Cardinal Cites Queens Priest, Parish

baby in a manger is proof enough for Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York that Americans can express a culture of life. And it wasn’t the Christ child. Instead, it was a newborn infant left by his mother in the crib of a manger scene at a parish in Queens.

The Nativity story also reminds us that many seriously developmentally disabled residents of Brooklyn are unable to find suitable lodgings in our own diocese.

Keep In Touch with Elderly

Dear Editor: Thank you to Sister Constance Veit, l.s.p., for her ideas (Jan. 16) on using technology for older people. Using music and song is a wonderful way to reach seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Monfortian Ministry

Dear Editor: I have been blessed and thankful to work for the last 33 years with the Montfort Missionary priests. These men came to America in the early 1900s along with the Daughters of Wisdom to establish parishes and schools. Saint Mary Gate of Heaven in Ozone Park has been run by the Montforts since the early 1900s.

Eucharistic Congress Opens in the Philippines

Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Robert Barron said popular culture’s message of individuals being “infinitely right” is “repugnant to (Catholics’) eucharistic faith.” But he also said Christianity is “running on fumes” as it tries to counter the trend of people leaving the Church or staying away from the Eucharist.
