The Laity and Vocations

Dear Editor: As a former resident of the Brooklyn/Queens Diocese, I am pleased to learn of the workshop on vocation recruitment (April 21). I do believe that it is imperative that the laity take on some responsibility for promoting vocations to the priesthood and the consecrated life.

Perhaps there could be a vocations committee in each parish which would oversee efforts to spread the word about the need for vocations in the parish school, nearby high schools, and within families.

It is true that the family lays the foundation for a vocation. Parents need to be encouraged to foster vocations among their children. Church vocations are such a rich resource with the Church. Let us not allow them to die out leaving us without the sacraments.

Editor’s Note: Bishop DiMarzio has encouraged every parish to have its own vocations committee.
