For one day, the New York City Police Department underwent an enormous personnel change.

Students who wrote winning essays in the NYPD’s annual Police Commissioner for a Day Essay Contest, served as honorary officers, bureau chiefs, borough and precinct commanders.

Alanna McAuliffe, a junior at Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, filled the top position, police commissioner. She won this honor with her essay on illegal handguns. She  received a check for $250 and a plaque announcing her accomplishment.

Her efforts also resulted in a $250 check for Bishop Kearney and a top educator award for Sister Thomasine Stagnitta, C.S.J., Kearney principal.

Freshman Cali Halm added to Kearney’s triumph by securing an award as commander for the 66th Precinct.

Three students from Christ the King R.H.S., Middle Village, were also chosen to participate in the program.

Krystale Salvati, Ashley Biondo and Dominik Makocki were paired with members of the Police Department’s executive corps, borough and precinct commanders for a day.

“Christ the King High School is proud to have representatives from our school participating in the Police Commissioner for a Day Program,” said Peter Mannarino, principal. “The three students that were chosen from Christ the King exemplify our school’s mission in teaching young students to become independent thinkers and the moral leaders of tomorrow.”
