Tired and sensitive pregnant mothers and new parents beware. “Then Comes Baby: The Catholic Guide to Surviving and Thriving in the First Three Years of Parenthood” by Greg and Lisa Popcak is no exception to the lot within the genre of parenting books. There will be a few points of contention amid the advice that the couple extolls.
Every fall semester at St. John’s University, I have the students in my Honors Introduction to Philosophy class read, write about and discuss Viktor E. Frankl’s book “Man’s Search for Meaning.” If there is anyone reading this column who has not read Frankl’s book, I strongly encourage them to read it. I marvel at Frankl’s insights.
FIFTY YEARS AGO, prior to my freshman year at Baltimore’s St. Paul Latin H.S., the late Father W. Vincent Bechtel introduced me to The Summer Reading List, upper-case. Father Bechtel didn’t fool around: He tossed his teenage charges into the deep end of the English and American literature pool and told us, in effect, “Start swimming.”
