Sister Mary

Sister Mary Travers, R.S.M., a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 66 years, died June 16 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood. She was 87.

Born in Brooklyn, she attended Holy Cross School, Flatbush, and Catherine McAuley H.S., East Flatbush, before entering the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate, Syosset, in September of 1950. She professed final vows in 1956.

She ministered in childcare at Angel Guardian Home in Dyker Heights, 1953-54, and the Convent of Mercy in Fort Greene, 1954-58.

Her teaching ministry included assignments at Sacred Heart, Fort Greene, 1958-60; St. Jerome in East Flatbush, 1960-67; St. Bernard, Mill Basin, where she served as acting principal 1967-68; St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, 1968-74; Our Lady of Peace, Lynbrook, L.I., 1974-77; and Mater Christi Diocesan H.S., Astoria, 1977-99.

She is survived by her brother John.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone. Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I.
