After silently praying at the 9/11 Memorial in Downtown Manhattan Sept. 25, Pope Francis entered the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, where he mourned the victims of the “senseless act of destruction” and asked more than 400 religious representatives to be prophets of reconciliation and peace.

On Sept. 11, the students of St. Athanasius School, Bensonhurst, under the direction of their principal, Diane Competello, held a remembrance ceremony to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11/01.
On a Friday morning, people walking on the Brooklyn Bridge solemnly made way for a group of 50 firefighters marching from Ground Zero to the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph in Prospect Heights, where they celebrated a Mass for those lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The firefighters were carrying 23 flags, one for each of the members of Battalion 57 who perished trying to save lives after the attack on the World Trade Center.
My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, This week, we have commemorated the anniversary of the terrorist attack on America on Sept. 11, 2001. That day is etched in the memory of all people in the United States, most especially the people of the New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania metropolitan regions who experienced firsthand that terrible day in our history. We cannot erase from our memories the horrific recollections of that day. However, we can learn from those experiences that no matter how great was the tragedy which we experienced, the resiliency of our faith enables us to come back and to become stronger from such a terrible experience.
Taking care to keep the memory of the events of Sept. 11, 2001 alive, students from Jamaica Estates visited the memorial museum at the site of the twin towers. The Aquinas Honor Society from Immaculate Conception School was the first group to ever schedule a classroom workshop at the 9/11 Memorial Museum, for which they received an official certificate from the museum.
Last week, we commemorated the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September, now in its 13th year. With each passing year, our memory of this event seems not to fade, as it is indelibly imprinted on our souls.
