New York’s Catholic bishops praised Gov. Kathy Hochul’s decision to opt New York into a new federal scholarship tax credit program that will allow taxpayers to receive a federal credit for donations to nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations that help families pay for education-related expenses.
Given the unlikelihood that New York state will create a parental school choice program anytime soon, the state’s Catholic bishops have shifted their advocacy toward federal legislation.
Applauding a recent executive order that promotes parental choice in education, Bishop David O’Connell highlighted that the order “rightly recognizes that parents are the primary educators of their children.”
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster signed a school choice bill into law on May 4 that will enable families in the state to receive annual vouchers for their children’s education-related expenses, including private school tuition.
School choice measures, long-supported by Catholic education leaders, are gaining quick momentum at the start of the new year, with governors in Iowa and Utah signing universal school choice bills into law in late January and legislatures in other states considering similar actions.
