McCarren Park Statue of Slain Polish Priest, Martyr Defaced

The NYPD launched an investigation Wednesday into the vandalism of a statue that memorialized Polish priest and martyr, Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, who was murdered in 1984 due to his work within Poland’s Solidarity movement.

April 29 Marks Day of Polish Clergy Martyrdom During World War II

April 29 marks the day Polish Catholics solemnly remember when nearly 2,000 of the country’s 10,000 diocesan priests perished during the Nazi German occupation in World War II. The day coincides with the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp in Dachau, Germany.

Film on St. Faustina Makes Debut Oct. 28

A new film on the life of St. Faustina Kowalska, the Polish nun whose visions of Jesus led to the Divine Mercy devotion, will have a one-night-only showing Oct. 28 at about 700 screens across the United States.

New Bridge Still Honors Polish Past

The Kosciuszko Bridge linking Brooklyn and Queens is named for Polish Catholic and American Revolutionary War hero Tadeusz Kosciuszko. Father Marek Sobczak, C.M., pastor of St. Stanislaus Kostka, Greenpoint, is glad the bridge will continue to commemorate the sacrifices Kosciuszko and other Poles made to build America.
