A Mass honoring Our Lady of Altagracia, patron of the Dominican Republic, was celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Brownsville, Jan. 19.
Our Lady of Mercy, Brownsville, celebrated Garifuna Settlement Day in style. The holiday commemorates the arrival in 1802 of the Garifuna people in Belize, Central America, after being exiled by the British Army from the Grenadine Islands in the Caribbean. While the Garifuna people mostly settled in Belize, some also made their homes in Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.
On the day when the nation pauses to reflect on the life, witness and ministry of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Catholics in Brooklyn and Queens gathered to celebrate the Baptist preacher’s life, and keep his dream alive amid the challenges in today’s world.
