Recess is a chance for kids to be themselves: get up from behind the school desk, meet up with friends from other classes, and put their high energy to good use. But this school year, playground time looks a lot more like an office coffee break for young ones in Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Brooklyn.
On Oct. 6, Governor Andrew Cuomo established three color-coded zones — red, orange, and yellow — to identify areas with increasing numbers of coronavirus cases. Public and private schools in the red and orange zones were temporarily closed, beginning Oct. 6 and Oct. 9, respectively, and must remain closed for at least two weeks.
The school, which opened its 2019-20 academic year on Sept. 4, is encouraging its students to say “hello” to their classmates and to be especially welcoming to new kids at the school. It’s part of the national “Start With Hello” initiative to show students that kindness truly matters.
