This first Sunday of Lent affords us the opportunity to reflect upon exactly what it is we are trying to combat in this holy season of Lent, namely sin. In all three readings, we learn not only about the nature of sin itself but also the remedy for sin.
My hope is that the offices and agencies in our own Diocese of Brooklyn take the words of Pope Francis to heart as they reach out to communities that might not be present at Mass in our churches each Sunday.
As we look forward to this season which prepares us for the glory of Easter, we recognize that it is a penitential season. It is the season when we hear the plan that Jesus has given us in the Gospel, that we pray, that we fast and that we perform works of charity.
