As we begin the season of Lent, the Rite of Election on the first Sunday of Lent is perhaps one of the highlights of the Liturgical Year in the Diocese of Brooklyn. For those who are to be Baptized and fully initiated on Easter, their journey begins in earnest during this 40-day period.

Lent is about renewal, change, conversion, turning more toward God. In fact, it began as a conversion experience for catechumens who were preparing to become part of the Church.
In order to assist the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn to take full advantage of the Lenten season, our Bishop, Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, would like to remind us of these obligations.
Lent is a journey – a journey to Calvary with the Lord and an opportunity to reflect on how well we’ve each picked up the cross daily (as instructed in Luke 9:23) and followed Him.
The season of Lent is the time when we are asked to firm up our faith, when we are to give special attention to training our will so that we can love God all the more.
This first Sunday of Lent affords us the opportunity to reflect upon exactly what it is we are trying to combat in this holy season of Lent, namely sin. In all three readings, we learn not only about the nature of sin itself but also the remedy for sin.
My hope is that the offices and agencies in our own Diocese of Brooklyn take the words of Pope Francis to heart as they reach out to communities that might not be present at Mass in our churches each Sunday.
As we look forward to this season which prepares us for the glory of Easter, we recognize that it is a penitential season. It is the season when we hear the plan that Jesus has given us in the Gospel, that we pray, that we fast and that we perform works of charity.
