Irish Remember What Catholic Schools Have Done for Them
It seems only fitting that the proceeds from The Great Irish Fair are donated to support Catholic education in Brooklyn and Queens. One by one, the honorees at the Fair in Coney Island this past weekend came to the microphone to accept their laurels and almost to a man or woman, they thanked their teachers in Catholic schools for the success they have had in life.

The 36th annual Great Irish Fair of New York, a family-friendly event celebrating Irish-American faith, heritage and culture, will be presented by The Irish American Building Society Charities, Inc., on Saturday, Sept. 16, beginning with Mass at 10 a.m. at the Ford Amphitheater at the Coney Island Boardwalk.

A champion Irish step dancer, Caitlin Therese Ward is no stranger to the Great Irish Fair. Since she was a young girl, her family attended the annual event and even designated it as a time for reunions.

Award-winning author Alice McDermott, whose writing captures the lives and experiences of Irish-Americans, is serving as The Bard of the Fair.
Father Mychal Judge Memorial Award – Father Brian Jordan, O.F.M.
Father Brian Jordan, O.F.M., chaplain at St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, was a personal friend of Father Mychal Judge, O.F.M., for 25 years, and last spoke to him during morning prayer on Sept. 11, 2001.
Kathleen Slattery Woman of the Year – Sister Marie Mackey, C.S.J.
Queens-born Sister Marie Mackey, C.S.J., is a dedicated Catholic educator who loves to share her faith, learn about her Irish roots and dreams of her next visit to the Emerald Isle.
Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Memorial Award – Father Robert Lauder
Author and university professor, Father Robert Lauder, was a close friend of Bishop Joseph Sullivan and is humbled to receive an award in the late bishop’s name.
