Approximately 675 local families were “able to be blessed” through Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens’ Christmas toy giveaways in December. The unique events gave parents and grandparents the chance to pick out an item for each of their children or grandchildren.
The Catholic Foundation for Brooklyn and Queens held its annual Bishop’s Christmas Luncheon Dec. 5 at Russo’s on the Bay, Howard Beach, to raise funds for scholarships to Catholic elementary schools in Brooklyn and Queens.
“It’s very important to me because it shows other people and our children to be generous and kind always,” said Maria Catanese, who, along with her husband Alphonse, donated hundreds of Thanksgiving turkeys to fellow New Yorkers through Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens.
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, working to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ “to bring good news to the poor … release to captives … sight to the blind, and let the oppressed go free” (Luke 4:18), as stated on the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ website.
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio led a group of Catholic and Buddhist leaders from Brooklyn, Chicago, Ill., and Los Angeles, Calif., at a meeting with Pope Francis Sept. 12. The delegation presented the Holy Father with sustainable projects they are working on that will provide affordable housing to serve vulnerable populations, like the elderly and formerly homeless.

Catholic Charities observed the 48th anniversary of Earth Day by teaching children how to reduce, reuse and recycle at the Ocean Bay Community Center, in the Arverne section of Rockaway.
