Annual Bishop’s Christmas Luncheon

The Bishop’s Christmas Luncheon, Dec. 16 at Russo’s on the Bay, Howard Beach, raised nearly $750,000 which included money contributed from matching scholarship funds. The proceeds will benefit the Bishop’s Scholarship Fund and youth evangelization programs.

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio rededicated the Shrine Church of Our Lady Solace in Coney Island, Dec. 20, during a festive liturgy symbolizing a rebirth of the church building that has suffered disrepair for over half a century. He also consecrated the new altar.

Feast Day in the Streets of Corona

On the eve of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s feast day, thousands of parishioners of Our Lady of Sorrows celebrated with a street procession, a Mass in Spanish, cultural performances and countless flowers. Mass was held outdoors because the Corona church has been closed since Jan. 4 when an early morning fire caused extensive damage.

Thirty-seven parishes participated in the diocesan celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dec. 12 at St. Joseph’s Co-Cathedral, Prospect Heights. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio was the main celebrant as more than 3,000 people of Mexican origins filled the church.
