This fall, St. Finbar Church is celebrating 135 years of ministry to the communities of Bath Beach and Bensonhurst at the parish’s annual dinner dance, Oct. 15 at El Caribe Country Club, Mill Basin.
This year’s honorees include Father Luke Wei, former parochial vicar, who will receive the Richard Catarelli Award. NYPD Det. Stephen Agosta, John and Antonella Eramo and Domenick and Rosalie Mineo, will receive the Caritas Award.

Next Friday, Sept. 25, Father John Murray, C.Ss.R., will lead a Scripture study on “Priest and Priesthood in the Old Testament” at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Sunset Park. This session will begin promptly at 11 a.m. in the lower sacristy. All are welcome. Bring a Bible.

In anticipation of Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S., St. Ignatius of Loyola Church, Manhattan, is hosting “The Poverty Simulation,” this Saturday, Sept. 19. The simulation, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., is intended to sensitize participants to the plight of people living in poverty in the U.S.

Support Our Aging Religious (SOAR!) celebrates its 29th anniversary annual awards dinner at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan on Oct. 7. SOAR! is a national nonprofit organization which provides grants to assist the immediate needs of aging Catholic religious across the U.S.
Msgr. Kevin L. Sullivan, executive director, Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of New York, will receive the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Award. Sister Margaret McDermott, a Sister of St. Dominic, Blauvelt, N.Y., will receive the Father Victor Yanitelli, SJ Award for serving as founder and executive director of the Tolentine-Zeizer Community Life Center, the Bronx.
Financial consulting firm, Deloitte, LLP, will be honored with the Saint Katharine Drexel Award.

Our Lady of the Snows parish, North Floral Park, invites Tablet TALK readers to participate in a Bible study experience this fall. “The Troubles of Tobit,” an exploration into this unique book in Scripture, runs five Wednesdays, starting Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the parish meeting room. Williamsburg will kick off its “Walk with Francis” pledge to walk in the footsteps of the Holy Father this Sunday, Sept. 20. Starting at 4 p.m. at the San Damiano Mission, the one-and-a-half mile walk will feature prayers and reflections on Pope Francis’ message on ecology, the dignity of the poor and elderly and the marginalized.
The event will conclude with Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 6 p.m.

Many local Sisters of Charity, Halifax, including Sister Joan Holmberg, S.C., were in Emmitsburg, Md., Sept. 12-14, to mark the 40th anniversary of the canonization of their foundress, Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton.
