St. Anselm First Graders Count!

From the very first day of school, first graders in teacher Josephine Ghorra’s class at St. Anselm Catholic Academy, Bay Ridge, were learning place value and other number concepts in a very natural way – by keeping track of the number of days they were in school. The daily “Number of the Day” routine requires students to solve math problems. In addition, helpers have placed one additional coffee stirrer in the “ones” pocket of the Math Center until the ones became “tens” and the ten groups of “tens” marked the long-anticipated 100th day of school, which the students celebrated by dressing up.

Another Successful Scouting For Food Drive

For the third year in a row, the Boy Scouts Troop and Pack 349 adhered to the scout law with a food drive over the weeked on March 2-3. They stood in the lobby of Stop and Shop in Glendale to ask shoppers for much needed food. The scouts were able to donate 15 full shopping carts to the pantry at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Forest Hills. The event also helped the boys learn valuable life lessons: setting a realistic goal, formulating a plan to achive the goal and working together as a team.
