Empowering Youth to Help Heroes
Five eighth graders from Ave Maria Catholic Academy took top prize in a recent competition for creating Helping Heroes, a military care-package program. The Howard Beach crew beat 10 middle-school teams from across the city to win a yearlong partnership to expand their program with Project Empower, contest sponsor. The competition invited students to design and implement a nonprofit-style initiative addressing a real-world issue. Helping Heroes raised over $400 and sent more than 40 shoeboxes of toiletries to active duty military overseas. St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, welcomes artist Edward Hillel for a special Yom HaShoah presentation, “An Artist’s Dialogue with the Holocaust,” April 19, 11 a.m. in the Maroney Forum, located on the seventh floor. The event, part of the college’s annual Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration, offers attendees the chance to listen to Hillel speak about the meaning of his work, which includes video, drawings and sculpture. Event is free and open to the public.
This week’s Tip of the Tablet TALK Top Hat goes to the Holy Thursday Midnight Run team from Holy Cross H.S., Flushing. The volunteer team sorted through students’ donations of toiletries and made comfort packages. They distributed these packages to the homeless on the streets of Manhattan on Holy Thursday night, in cooperation with the volunteer group Midnight Run. Hats off to Holy Cross for observing Holy Week in this meaningful way.
St. Pancras Students Present Living Stations
Students from St. Pancras School, Glendale, presented Living Stations of the Cross for their entire parish community on Friday evening, March 30.
