The Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, varsity softball team already made history this season by capturing the school’s first-ever Brooklyn/Queens championship.

So anything better than that would have just been icing on the cake.

The Bonnies advanced to the GCHSAA state championship game but fell 8-2 at the hands of the Kellenberg M.H.S., Uniondale, Firebirds May 29 at Queens College, Flushing.

Representing the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Kellenberg has now won back-to-back state softball championships. The Firebirds’ pitcher, Sabrina DeAngelis, threw a no-hitter and faced the minimum in the semifinal matchup against St. Joseph’s by the Sea, Staten Island, before earning the win against Fontbonne.

After she threw a 1-0 shutout with 10 strikeouts in the semifinal game against the Nichols School, Buffalo, N.Y., Fontbonne junior pitcher Nicolette Trapani again took the hill for the Bonnies in the championship.

She surrendered a run in the bottom of the first inning when Kellenberg third baseman Stephanie Staiano drove home second baseman Krista King with a single.

Leading 1-0, DeAngelis was again working on a no-hitter through four innings. She retired 12 straight Bonnies after surrendering a leadoff walk to freshman third baseman Bianca Marletta in the top of the first.

In the top of the fifth, Bonnies’ junior right fielder Natalia Sroga blooped a single to center for Fontbonne’s first hit of the game. Senior first baseman Kristina Mandela followed with a sharp single through the left side of the infield. With one out, junior designated player Maria Gentile walked to load the bases. But DeAngelis dug deep to strikeout the next two hitters to escape the rally unscathed.

Kellenberg responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-0. Right fielder Amy Quinn and shortstop Amanda Crimarco each delivered RBI base hits.

Despite the deficit, Fontbonne did not fold. In the top of the sixth after a leadoff walk from sophomore shortstop Ariana Dillon and a double to left center by junior center fielder Christina Calascione, junior catcher Maria Serrantino drove home two runs with a single to center. But again, DeAngelis got out of the jam.

The Firebirds were relentless however and added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Quinn finished off her day 3-for-3 as her single was part of the rally. King, DeAngelis and Staiano drove home runs in the inning.

Even with the loss, the Bonnies finished second in N.Y.S.

“Just coming this far meant so much to us,” Trapani said. “We made Fontbonne history. We’re proud of how we played. We stuck together and didn’t give up.”

All but two starters will be returning next season, so the team is already gearing up for another deep postseason run.

“We are ready to win next year and ready to come back strong,” said Serrantino, who drove home the only run in the Bonnies’ semifinal win. “We know we will win.”

Head coach Frank Marinello said he is extremely proud of his team but that he now expects to be back in the state championships next year.

“Now they understand that they belong,” he said. “This is just a milestone for next year. We belong here. That’s more important than anything else.”
