Catholic Schools Week 2017

St. Mel’s Catholic Academy

Christ ~ Academics ~ Community

St. Mel’s Catholic Academy enjoys a legacy of excellence, serving the Flushing, Whitestone, College Point and Bayside areas since 1960. St. Mel’s offers free full-day Pre-K for all; early childhood programs for children ages six months to three years old including Mommy and Me, Toddler Time and Nursery; and education through eighth grade.

The academy’s mission is to foster the spiritual, social, emotional and academic growth of our students in a nurturing Christ-centered environment. St. Mel’s promotes a strong Catholic identity in our children, instilling core values such as kindness, integrity and respect to guide these future leaders of tomorrow.

Academics, Extracurriculars

Students develop a strong foundation of excellence through comprehensive academic and extracurricular programs. The academy offers Spanish, art, music and religious studies, with additional math instruction after school to prepare students for the TACHS and NYS exams. Graduates are consistently accepted into highly competitive, specialized high school programs in New York City. 100 percent of students are accepted into Catholic high schools, and graduates have received more than $350,000 in full and partial scholarships.

St. Mel’s teams have achieved championships in baseball, soccer, volleyball and basketball. Other programs include Girl Scouts, Photography Club, Fitness and Yoga, Student Council, Yearbook and Youth Ministry.

Technology and Innovation

As the first elementary school in the Diocese of Brooklyn to offer a 1:1 take home Chromebook for each child, St. Mel’s has a strong reputation for technology and innovation. WiFi is available throughout the school, SMART boards in every classroom, and iPads and laptops in the computer lab.

A Lego Enrichment Program focusing on engineering and creative thinking is available as well. St. Mel’s was also one of the first to join the Academy Network of redesigned websites.

This week, St. Mel’s is proud to announce the opening of a state-of-the-art STEM Lab, coinciding with Catholic Schools Week 2017. The Lab features a 3D printer and 50” televisions for mirroring/projecting lessons from iPads and Chromebooks directly to the TVs.
