St. Mark’s Observes 150th Anniversary

Under Father Joseph Grimaldi’s lead and in conjunction with the 150th Anniversary Committee, a range of spiritual, community, celebratory, memorabilia, and fund-raising activities took place to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of St. Mark’s parish in Sheepshead Bay. Some parishioners currently are touring the shrines of Italy with Father Grimaldi, pastor. Earlier this month, Auxiliary Bishop Frank Caggiano was the main celebrant of the a Mass of thanksgiving at the church as the year of activties winds down. Other events included a week-long retreat in Lent, days of recollection, publication and video of the parish history, and a collection of memorabilia telling the story of the parish. A dinner-dance also was held at Gargiulo’s, Coney Island. During the year, a capital campaign was conducted, collecting more than $900,000 which was used to repair the church tower, as well as for interior and exterior renovations. Another jubilee occasion will be held on Dec. 16 as the parish dedicates a new memorial garden to the Blessed Mother.
