Catholic Schools Week 2016

St. Francis of Assisi School, Astoria

Faith

St. Francis of Assisi School (SFA) opened its doors on Feb. 13, 1951. Within a short time, a strong foundation of Catholic Identity and educational achievement in the vibrant neighborhood of Astoria was established. Today, 65 years later, SFA continues to celebrate the spirit of its founders as it seeks to develop its mission.

Knowledge

Since the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, SFA has fully embraced the Catholic Schools Week theme by enriching our school community and commitment to growing a school of excellence. SFA is focused on designing instruction so our students are engaged in cognitively challenged tasks and involved in gaining mastery of required skills. The goal is to teach to support our students’ strengths. “Success For All” is the aim.

In addition, SFA is developing a Technology Plan that will keep us evolving in a modern Wi-Fi environment as responsible users of innovative technology.

Service

As a Mission Banner School, SFA is eagerly involved in service projects. This school year students are partnering with the Wounded Warriors Project to honor veterans returning home from combat. SFA students will also be reflecting on essential Church themes shared by Pope Francis at the World Meeting of Families.

Caring Community

Today, the graduates of St. Francis of Assisi School receive the Gospel values, extensive knowledge and essential skills that enable them to become productive Catholic citizens of the global world.

In “An Affair of the Heart: A Biblical and Franciscan Journey” by Sister Patricia Jordan, F.S.M., we learned that “one winter morning in 1208, St. Francis of Assisi heard the words of the Gospel not only with his ears, but with his heart, and it changed his life forever.”

It is our hope that for our students, an SFA Catholic education will make their lives and the lives of those they touch greater.
