St. Bernadette Catholic Academy in Dyker Heights is a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence that continues to thrive spiritually and academically. The academy is persistent in maintaining and upgrading staff, resources and facilities to keep pace with and surpass the demands of technology and curriculum. That diligence has produced two National Catholic Education Association (NCEA)-distinguished teachers and likewise, the principal was recognized as an NCEA Distinguished Principal.
St. Bernadette Catholic Academy offers a strong Catholic academic environment. In addition to learning about the faith and allowing it to permeate the day, the academy values academic achievement and reaches to meet and exceed standards in all areas, giving every student the opportunity to reach his or her potential.
The academy has a faculty comprised of religious sisters and dedicated lay teachers who collaborate to build a caring community based on the tenets of Jesus Christ and a strong academic foundation for its students. St. Bernadette provides studies in religion and a Common Core-based curriculum as well as special content areas of Italian, technology, art, music and physical education.
Last year, the school implemented a new state-of-the art science lab and STEM curriculum to offer hands-on learning experiences and facilitate the new curriculum. Additionally, the academy was pleased to have piloted a program introducing Greek and Latin roots to pre-k through eighth grades.
Extracurricular activities provide students with opportunities to develop leadership skills, interests and personal talent. An active student council organizes events and gatherings. Students may also participate in the hand bell choir, school band, book club, choir, violin, craft club, geography club, Mathletics Club, Aquinas program and as altar servers. Students who thrive on academic challenge engage in math, history, geography and spelling bees. Similarly, gifted students are recognized via the Johns Hopkins Search for Talented Youth and the Junior National Young Leaders Conference.
The academy is very proud of the Class of 2016. Graduates earned over $350,000 in high school scholarships.
