Sports Round-Up Sept. 24

>>CYO Fall Sports Fully Back

The fall Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) sports season began recently with soccer, high school basketball, and cross-country.

“After the early termination of the 2019-2020 year when COVID-19 first hit and two years of modified play in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, we are all excited for what should be a full return to regular play during our normal calendar dates,” said CYO Director Keith Goldberg. “It’s great to see everyone back.”

>>Palmer Leads Cyclones’ Offense

Former Holy Cross H.S., Flushing, shortstop-turned-outfielder Jaylen Palmer wrapped up his minor-league season with the Brooklyn Cyclones, the High-A affiliate of the New York Mets. In 102 games, Palmer led the team with nine home runs, 22 stolen bases, and 50 walks.

>>Konchalski Classic

Fordham University, the Bronx, will host the first-ever Tom Konchalski Classic Nov. 19, 21, and 22 at the historic Rose Hill Gymnasium.

The classic will honor the memory of Konchalski, a 1968 Fordham graduate who spent decades as a local high school basketball scout. He passed away in February 2021 after a battle with cancer.

The Fordham Rams will host the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass.; the University of Illinois Chicago; and Stonehill College, Easton, Mass.
