St. Michael’s Catholic Academy’s Recess Choir sang the National Anthem at Citi Field prior to the New York Mets versus the Miami Marlins game on Sept. 29.

The game held significant meaning to Mets fans, as nearly 44,000 people showed up to see David Wright’s final game. The Mets captain started at third base and played four innings after working his way back from injuries that cost him to miss parts of three full seasons.

The choir from the Flushing school joined Mets fans in giving Wright a rousing standing ovation, thanking him for bleeding orange and blue since he was drafted in the first round of the MLB draft in 2001.

The 35-year-old Wright ends his career as a seven-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner. He is also the franchise leader in hits, extra-base hits, RBIs and runs scored and is second to only Darryl Strawberry in home runs.

The Dominic A. Murray 21 Memorial Foundation will host its sixth annual “Copacabana” Red Gala fundraiser on Oct. 20 at Russo’s on the Bay, Howard Beach.

All proceeds raised go toward the funding of the foundation’s programs, which include free youth and young adult heart screenings, CPR-AED training and AEDs for youth serving organizations.

Dominic Murray was a standout basketball star at Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst. However, on Oct. 5, 2009, he died as a result of sudden cardiac arrest while playing an open pickup game at Farmingdale State College, L.I. It was his opening night game, and he was just 17 years old.

In February 2010, Dominic’s mother Melinda Murray started the DomHeart21 foundation. She made it her life mission to prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy that became her reality.

Among this year’s gala honorees is current Msgr. McClancy girls’ varsity basketball coach Dewey Hopkins. The gala includes a cocktail reception, dinner banquet, award ceremony, auctions and raffles.

Tickets are available for purchase until Oct. 13. Visit DomHeart21.org.
