Hannah Finnerty, a 6-foot guard on the Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, girls’ varsity basketball team, has committed to continue her hoops career at Siena College, Loudonville, N.Y.
The Woodside native and team captain was a Tablet All-Star during the 2019-2020 season when as a sophomore she averaged 12.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game.
This is the firs Division I signee coming out of Msgr. McClancy’s girls’ basketball program.
Her junior season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, was the site of the first-ever 2021 CHSAA Tom Konchalski Senior Basketball Showcase on Oct. 12. The event allowed local senior basketball players to display their skills in front of college coaches.
Konchalski was a longtime high school basketball scout who died Feb. 8 after a two-year battle with cancer. For 43 years, he produced the High School Basketball Illustrated newsletter, which provided detailed analysis of high school student-athletes up and down the East Coast.
A youth baseball and softball complex in Yaphank, L.I. now holds the name of legendary Los Angeles Dodgers manager and Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Oct. 9 at the facility – formerly known as Baseball Heaven.
Baseball greats Bobby Valentine, Jerry Royster and Eric Karros were in attendance to pay homage to Lasorda, a practicing Roman Catholic during his lifetime.
Lasorda died Jan. 7. He was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.
For National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Leah Salmorin, a parishioner at St. Joan of Arc, Jackson Heights, is running a “Light for Life” fundraiser to honor the health care heroes from NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst.
Salmorin, a breast cancer survivor, also runs the nonprofit organization Paddle for the Cure, which offers a unique survivorship program that uses recreational dragonboat paddling to manage the side effects of breast cancer treatment.
