Sports Round-Up May 7

The WNBA’s New York Liberty open their season Saturday, May 7 at Barclays Center in Downtown Brooklyn. Student-athletes from the GCHSAA got the unique opportunity to be present in the tunnels as they players took the floor. All tickets purchased through team-specific links benefitted the league’s member schools.


St. Edmund Prep H.S., Sheepshead Bay, senior varsity baseball pitcher Joe Dressman recently threw a no-hitter en route to being named CHSAA ‘A’ Division Pitcher of the Week. In other St. Edmund Prep baseball news, senior catcher Frankie Sebastiano has committed to continue his baseball career at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, Pa.


The Cleveland Guardians have recalled Richie Palacios from their minor-league system. The Brooklyn born infielder/outfielder played Catholic Youth Organization basketball for St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, along with his older brother Josh, who is currently playing in the Toronto Blue Jays organization after making his MLB debut last year. Richie’s first game was on April 25, and he recorded a his first two big-league hits: a single and double.


The Catholic Youth Organization of Brooklyn and Queens crowned its first set of boys’ basketball diocesan champions.
