Four members of the Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, girls’ varsity basketball team will be continuing their hoops careers in college.
Senior team captain Grace Brodersen is heading to Dominican College, Orangeburg, N.Y. The 2017-2018 Tablet All-Star averaged 7.5 pts. and 8.0 rebounds per game last season. Senior Kristine Krslovic, a two-time Tablet All-Star who averaged 8.0 pts. and 5.0 rebounds per game last season, will be playing at SUNY Oneonta, N.Y.
Seniors Faith Hernandez (Concordia College, Bronxville, N.Y.) and Jules Martinez (College of New Rochelle, N.Y.) will also be playing in college. Hernandez joins fellow senior and three-time Tablet All-Star Rhona McCaughey as Lady Crusaders heading to Concordia.
The Swim Strong Foundation, a local nonprofit charity organization that teaches people how to swim, is hosting its sixth annual Water Safety Awareness Month events.
There will be four locations this year: Saturday, May 12 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Far Rockaway H.S.; Sunday, May 13 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Boys Club of N.Y., Manhattan; Monday, May 14 from 5-8 p.m. at Bushwick H.S.; and Wednesday, May 16 from 7-9 p.m. at Jamaica H.S.
The organization was founded by Shawn Slevin, former Catholic Youth Organization swimming coach at St. Sebastian, Woodside. To date, the foundation has taught more than 8,200 people to swim.
The events are free. Participants must be at least 8 years old and 55 inches tall. Register at the Swim Strong Foundation’s website.
