Sports Round-Up May 1

The St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, men’s soccer team won its ninth Northeast Conference championship in program history on April 16. The Terriers defeated Long Island University, Downtown Brooklyn, 6-5, in penalty kicks. With the win, St. Francis secured the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA College Cup, is being played in Cary, N.C.


CHSAA/GCHSAA basketball has officially returned. High school teams in the diocese will be playing in league-sanctioned tournaments this spring. The boys’ version takes places at Archbishop Stepinac H.S., White Plains, N.Y., and runs through May 27. The girls are playing at Island Garden, West Hempstead, L.I., through May 21. Welcoming Back a Crusader

Ahead of Opening Day for the Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, varsity baseball team, former pitching standout Don Cooper, Class of 1974, returned to the school to wish the team well. He’s pictured with Msgr. McClancy’s President and former baseball coach Nick Melito.

Cooper was a Catholic Youth Organization star in baseball and basketball for St. Mary’s of Winfield, Woodside, before playing both sports at Msgr. McClancy. He spent 32 seasons as a pitching coach in the Chicago White Sox organization, including 21 in the big leagues. He is a 2005 World Series champion.
