State Runners-Up

Two local high school basketball teams finished second in their respective CHSAA state championship tournament.

Fresh off a historic first-ever diocesan title, the Holy Cross H.S., Flushing, varsity girls’ hoops teams advanced to the ‘A’ Division state championship game. The Knights lost to St. Joseph by the Sea, Staten Island.

On the boys’ side, the varsity team from Cathedral Prep and Seminary, Elmhurst, dropped a close contest to St. Mary’s H.S., Lancaster, N.Y., in the ‘B’ Division state title game. The Crusaders ended the regular season with an 18-game winning streak.


Micaiah Emanuel, a senior at St. John’s Prep, Astoria, set a personal record and placed sixth overall in the long jump at the AAU National Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach, Va. Emanuel recorded a jump of 20 feet, 4.5 inches.


April 2 marks the 50th anniversary of the sudden death of now-baseball-Hall of Famer and Brooklyn’s adopted son Gil Hodges. To mark the occasion, Our Lady Help of Christians, Midwood, will host a memorial mass at noon on Saturday, April 2. The Mass will be celebrated by recently retired Bishop Raymond Chappetto, a longtime Brooklyn Dodgers fan. All are welcome.
