Sports Round-Up March 12

By reaching the 15-win plateau this season, St. John’s University, Jamaica, head men’s basketball coach Mike Anderson continued his streak of 20 straight seasons without a losing record. He just completed his third season coaching the Johnnies and before that spent 17 years combined between the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Missouri, and the University of Alabama.


The following diocesan student-athletes were named to the Catholic High School Hockey League 2021-2022 All-Star teams:

‘A’ First Team

Jeremiah Ryan, forward: Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge

Steven Bencivenga, forward: Xaverian

J.P. Macrigiane, forward: St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows

Joe Barbera, defense: Holy Cross H.S., Flushing

Brandon Koenig, defense: St. Francis Prep

Erin Nilan, goalie: St. Edmund Prep H.S., Sheepshead Bay

A’ Second Team

Thomas Bianco, forward: St. Edmund Prep

Aaron Leach-Wilson, defense: Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst

Nick Guadagno, goalie: Holy Cross


After missing a full season in 2020-2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the GCHSAA once again crowned its girls’ basketball champions for this season.

In Varsity Tier 1, the Lady Kingsmen from Nazareth H.S., East Flatbush, fell just short of the title against Msgr. Scanlan H.S., the Bronx.

Varsity Tier 2 saw a bit of history, as Holy Cross H.S., Flushing, won the first diocesan title in school history with a victory over Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge. The Knights moved on to the Catholic State Championship played at Christ the King H.S., Middle Village.

On the junior varsity level, Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, captured the Tier 1 diocesan title with a win over Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst.
