Josh Palacios, a Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder who was a CYO basketball player at St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, hit his first Major League home run on June 2 against the San Francisco Giants. His younger brother, Richie, is recently played in the Cleveland Guardians organization.

The Catholic Youth Organization of Brooklyn and Queens crowned its diocesan girls’ volleyball champions, with the following teams emerging victorious.

Pee Wee: St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor, White

Novice: St. Helen, Howard Beach, Red

Bantam: Resurrection Ascension, Rego Park, Blue

Rookie: St. Stan’s, Ozone Park, Blue

Intermediate: St. Mary Gate of Heaven, Ozone Park, Team 1

Tyro: St. Andrew Avellino, Flushing, Gold

Junior: Sacred Heart, Glendale, White

After spending three seasons with the St. John’s University, Jamaica, baseball team, left-handed pitcher Joe LaSorsa recently made his Major League debut with the Tampa Bay Rays.

He became the 11th St. John’s player since 2005 to reach the big leagues. As a junior, he recorded a 1.66 ERA while limiting opposing batters to a .199 average.
