Former Christ the King H.S., Middle Village, varsity basketball standout Rawle Alkins made his NBA debut on Dec. 17 with the Chicago Bulls.

In three minutes of action, the Brooklyn-born shooting guard tallied a rebound, a steal and two assists.

Alkins played his first three high school seasons for the Royals. He was selected as a member of the CHSAA ‘AA’ All-League team as a sophomore and junior and was named league M.V.P. during the regular season and postseason in 2014-2015.

He was a Tablet All-Star in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. The Royals won the city championship in all three of Alkins’ seasons in Middle Village.

The Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) hosted its annual boys’ swim Olympics Dec. 15 at the Eisenhower Park Aquatics Center, East Meadow, L.I. The following two records were broken:

  • Timi Faba of St. Gregory the Great, Bellerose, broke the Senior 25-yd. Butterfly record with a time of 11.63 seconds. He now owns both the Junior and Senior Butterfly record.
  • Matthew Beehler of STORM (Blessed Trinity, Breezy Point/Resurrection, Gerritsen Beach) broke the Senior 50-yd. Backstroke record with a time of 26.21 seconds. He now owns the Backstroke record in all CYO divisions – a feat that has never happened before.

Over the Christmas break, the Holy Cross H.S., Flushing, boys’ varsity ‘B’ basketball team visited St. Mary’s Hospital for Children in Bayside. St. Nicholas himself joined the Knights as they brought toys, basketballs and Christmas fun to the kids of St. Mary’s.
