Sports Round-Up Nov. 18

The St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, girls’ cross-country team had a strong showing at the recent Brooklyn/Queens championship at Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx. The junior varsity team took home first place, and the varsity team finished second by a small margin to Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood. The freshmen team came in third.

Individually, junior Chiara Cinquemani won the varsity 2.5-mile race for the second straight year. On the junior varsity level, junior Raquel Ramirez placed first, marking consecutive years in which L’il Terriers have won individual titles on both the varsity and JV levels.


Gary Perone, the assistant general manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones, was honored as the 2017 Italian American Baseball Executive of the Year by the Italian American Baseball Foundation. The award is chosen each year by former MLB players who played in New York City.

A Bensonhurst native, Perone grew up as an altar server at St. Finbar parish, Bath Beach. He played baseball as a second baseman for Bishop Ford H.S., Park Slope, and went on to attend St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights.

In addition to his work with the Cyclones, Perone has spearheaded a number of citywide baseball initiatives including the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame, the N.Y.C. Varsity League and the Borough Cup tournament. He’s also on the board of the New York Hot Stove League and the Greater Sandlot Athletic Association.


The Catholic Youth Organization’s fall boys’ and girls’ cross-country season wrapped up with the diocesan championships Nov. 5 at Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx, with the following teams capturing diocesan titles:

Novice Boys: Our Lady of Victory, Bedford-Stuyvesant

Bantam Boys: St. Anne, Flushing

Junior Boys: St. Anne

Senior Boys: Our Lady of Lourdes, Queens Village

Novice Girls: St. Anne

Bantam Girls: St. Anne

Junior Girls: Our Lady of Lourdes

Senior Girls: St. Joan of Arc, Jackson Heights
